<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="DE-AT" style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Garamond",serif">Als erste nachantike Quelle zu Bodensee und Alpenrheintal berichtet Walahfrid Strabo (gest. 849), dass die Alemannen zu Beginn des 7. Jh. durch zwei irische Mönche
namens Columba und Gallus christianisiert wurden. Als Columba von Brigantium nach Italien weiterziehen wollte, erkrankte Gallus, blieb zurück und baute sich hoch über dem Bodensee eine <i>cella</i>, die zur Keim“zelle“ des Klosters Sankt Gallen werden sollte.
Aus Walahfrids Lebensbeschreibung des heiligen Gallus geht hervor, wie entvölkert, ja lebensfeindlich Alpenrheintal und Bodenseegebiet damals waren. Der Vortrag rückt die naturräumliche Situation in den Vordergrund, die Massen an eiszeitlichen Schottern und
die ausgedehnten Sümpfe, über die in der Antike schon Strabo aus Amasia und Ammianus Marcellinus berichteten. Bis zu ihrer konsequenten Trockenlegung im 19. und 20. Jh. haben die Sümpfe fast jährlich Seuchen verursacht. Eine archäologisch-topographische Analyse
von Ortsnamen wie Arbor Felix, Buchhorn, Lindau etc. läßt die Schwierigkeiten der damaligen Schifffahrt erkennen. Durch den Tod des heiligen Gallus haben die Sümpfe sogar Geschichte geschrieben: Hätte man im 7. Jh. schon über Antibiotika verfügt, wäre Gallus
mit seinem Meister Columba nach Italien gezogen und das Schicksal des Bodenseeraumes hätte einen anderen Verlauf genommen. Da Walahfrid Strabo, einer der bedeutendsten Dichter und Gelehrten der Karolingerzeit, von 838 bis 849 Abt des Klosters Reichenau war,
möge der Vortrag als kleine Ergänzung zum Gedenkjahr 2024 betrachtet werden, in dem sich die Gründung des Klosters Reichenau zum 1300. Mal jährt.</span><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
