Even today we occasionally employ our literary knowledge of these paintings to supplement historical research. The most informative sources, however, date from Roman times: through Pausanias’ Periegesis we learn of many a great work of art, now forever lost. A striking example is represented by paintings attributed to major artists of classical Greece. The aim will be to discuss recurring features and problems, such as attribution, position, and reception. Even these ‘painted wars’ might suffer from the reconstruction of a Greek identity in the Roman imperial era.
