Dem Wohlergehen möglichst Vieler und dem "good life" (Rawls, Sen, Dworkin) stehen nicht zuletzt Vergessen, falsches oder tendenziöses Erinnern entgegen. Dies ist auch für geschichtswissenschaftliches "Strategie"-Denken ein Problem. Die Beurteilung der Grossen Verbrechen des 20. Jahrhunderts etwa ist weitgehend konsensual; wie das Wissen darum am besten weitergegeben wird, bleibt offen. "Konstruktion von Kompatibilität" (Werte-Übereinstimmung) kann die Entscheidungen darüber erleichtern, was auf welche Weise erinnert werden soll. Technisch-naturwissenschaftliche Parameter stellen Anhaltspunkte bereit: einerseits bietet der oft bloss unterstellte Fortschritts-"Impuls" keine Garantien gegen des Vergessen einmal gefundener adäquater Lösungen, andererseits führen unzulängliche Kontrollmechanismen zu "runaway"-Dynamiken. Die finanzpolitischen Entwicklungen der letzten Jahre mit ihren Folgen haben deutlich gemacht, dass in einer autoregulativen Ökonomie sogar der Generationenvertrag in Gefahr ist. Die "grosse Degeneration" (Ferguson) beruht auch auf einem Zuwenig an wohldurchdachten Inputs. Desinteresse oder totales Vergessen sind - gesamtgesellschaftlich - folglich vergleichweise weniger gefährlich als inkompatibles / inkongruentes Vergessen (resp. Erinnern) oder bizarr inventives und substituierendes Erinnern. Die Historiker/innen sind, als Kuratoren des "Erinnerlichen", durch ihre prinzipiell vorteilhafte (aber unzureichend genützte) Position in die Pflicht genommen, zu besserem stewardship des kollektiven Gedächtnisses beizutragen. </span><span lang=EN style='mso-ansi-language:EN'><o:p></o:p></span></p><div><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-ansi-language:EN'>Georg Schmid, geb. 1944 in Wien, lehrte hauptsächlich an der Univ.
