For this research topic, the analytical juxtaposition of city and countryside is of central importance. Ideology is here understood as the product of a process of continuous negotiation between the reigning city (Constantinople), as the source of the dominant imperial ideology and culture, and a broader countryside (provinces) where dominant conceptions are confronted with diverse ideas, micro-cultures and needs within the framework of a dynamic dialectic that needs to be scrutinized.
