font-size:11pt">Hermann Langbein setzte Maßstäbe: als
Überlebender des NS-Terrors, als gesellschaftskritisch
intervenierender Historiker und als Akteur in den hitzigen
erinnerungspolitischen Konflikten der Nachkriegsjahrzehnte in
Österreich und Deutschland. Er überlebte Dachau, Auschwitz und
Neuengamme und hatte in den Konzentrationslagern zur
Kerngruppe des Widerstands gehört. Nach Kriegsende war der
ehemalige Spanienkämpfer Funktionär der KPÖ. Als
Generalsekretär des Internationalen Auschwitz-Komitees und
später als Sekretär des Comité International des Camps, der
Organisation der ehemaligen Häftlinge der
nationalsozialistischen Lager, kämpfte er für die Rechte der
Überlebenden. Zu einer Zeit, als kaum jemand sich für ihr Leid
interessierte und viele Opfergruppen in Vergessenheit
gerieten, schrieb Langbein Bücher über seine Erfahrungen in
den Terrorstätten des Dritten Reiches. Mit Verve setzte er
sich für die Entschädigung der Verfolgten, für die
Strafverfolgung von NS-Verbrechern und für die
gesellschaftliche sowie (rechts-)politische Auseinandersetzung
mit dem Nationalsozialismus ein. Dabei hatte er sich als
Kommunist in der politisch brisanten Atmosphäre des Kalten
Krieges stets gegen Angriffe zu wehren.</span></font></div>

font-size:11pt">Dass der Auschwitz-Prozess in Frankfurt am
Main 1963 zustande kam, ist wesentlich auf ihn zurückzuführen.
Maßgeblich trug er auch dazu bei, dass das gesellschaftliche
Bewusstsein für die Verbrechen des Dritten Reiches unter
Deutschen wie Österreichern allmählich wuchs und vor allem
junge Leute Sensibilität dafür entwickelten. Dafür spielten
seine Bücher eine wichtige Rolle, die eine große
Öffentlichkeit erreichten und bis heute Standardwerke sind.</span></font></div>

font-size:11pt">Langbein, von der Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem 1967
als "Gerechter unter den Völkern" geehrt, war in den siebziger
Jahren einer der Initiatoren, die Überlebende der NS-Zeit als
Zeitzeugen in die österreichischen Schulen holten. Gegen die
Auschwitz-Leugnung ging er leidenschaftlich vor, bis an sein
Lebensende engagierte er sich für die kritische Aufklärung und
die politische Bildung junger Leute; er starb mit 83 Jahren im
Oktober 1995 in seiner Geburtsstadt Wien.</span></font></div>

font-size:11pt">Hermann Langbein würde im Mai 100 Jahre alt
werden. Ziel der Tagung, die zu seinen Ehren aus diesem Anlass
veranstaltet wird, ist es, ein Porträt von Langbeins Wirken zu
zeichnen, seine Lebensleistung zu würdigen und über die
politischen und gesellschaftlichen Widerstände nachzudenken,
gegen die er anzukämpfen hatte.</span></font></div>
