(G.U. della Repubblica - IV serie speciale - Concorsi ed Esami n.22 del

Application Deadline April 24th, 2020

The candidate is expected to perform research activity in the project funded by PRIN 2017:

Divination and History: Reassessing Greek Oracular Responses.
Oracles on City Foundations and Colonial History.

The research project “Divination and Greek History (Archaic to Classical). Reassessing Greek Oracular Responses” (Università di Trento, Università; Seconda Università degli Studi di Napoli; Università degli Studi di Perugia; Sapienza Università di Roma) reconsider Delphic oracles transmitted by ancient literature that seem to be crucial for historical knowledge. The project aims to evaluate not only the 'authenticity' of these responses, but to study the narratives in which they are embedded, in order to clarify the genesis of the responses and narratives, their relationship both with Delphi and with the local communities, and the significance of the reconstruction of the past they imply.

Perugia research unit will deal in particular with the oracles on city foundations and colonial history. The project involves the study of oracles and oracular narratives and the construction of a database that will collect, inter alia, the numerous relevant ancient sources with critical apparatus, translations and indication of the folkloric motifs recognizable in the responses or narratives. The research activities embrace therefore the fields of archaic and classical Greek history, ancient literature, classical philology, and digital humanities.

The appointed researcher is furthermore expected to teach no more than
72 hours a year.

All best wishes for this hard time,

Massimo Nafissi
