[Newsletter Alte Geschichte] Funded PhD studentship at the University of Vienna

Applications are invited for the position of a PhD-level researcher at the Institute for Ancient History and Classics, Papyrology and Epigraphy at the University of Vienna (https://altegeschichte.univie.ac.at/) for an outstanding candidate interested in pursuing graduate-level study in the field of Roman cultural history and epigraphy.



The position is related to, and funded through, an ERC Advanced Grant award made to Prof. Peter Kruschwitz for his project MAPPOLA – ‘Mapping out the poetic landscape(s) of the Roman Empire’ (http://mappola.eu/).



The successful candidate and their project will contribute to the project’s work package 2: ‘The Creation of Poetic Landscapes and Spaces’ (details on which may be found on this – preliminary – web page: https://mappola.eu/index.php/wp2-the-creation-of-poetic-landscapes-and-spaces/).



Application and selection procedures



Applicants who wish to be considered for the position must submit – as a single PDF document – a motivation letter, a 2pp. academic cv, and a research proposal of 2,000–2,500 words outlining their proposed take on the work to be carried out under the rubric of work package 2 (as outlined above).  Please also arrange for one academic reference to be received separately by 18 October 2019 at the very latest.

Application deadline: 18 October 2019.



Selection method: interview, to be held approx. two weeks after the application deadline. Web interviews (in German or English) can be arranged for shortlisted candidates who do not already reside in Vienna.



Formal requirements



Applicants must be eligible to take up employment in Austria, meet all requirements for PhD level study at the University of Vienna, and agree to enrol as a PhD student in the Department of Ancient History and Classics, Papyrology and Epigraphy upon acceptance of the position:

The successful applicant will be expected to relocate to Vienna and join the university as an employee (0.75 FTE, fixed-term for 3 years, paid in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for staff at the University of Vienna) from January 2020, funded for a maximum of three years.



Applicants will be expected to be fluent in English and/or German (or to be prepared to bring their proficiency in both languages up to speed during the first year of joining the University of Vienna). Working knowledge of Italian, Spanish, and/or French would be a benefit. Good knowledge of Latin and at least basic knowledge of Ancient Greek will be expected.
