"Rigidity Phenomena For Lattices in Semi-Simple Lie Groups"

Abstract
This talk is a survey of results on rigidity of lattices in semi-simple Lie
Groups. The subject started with the work of Selberg, Calabi-Vesentini and
Weil on "local rigidity". Later stronger versions of rigidity were
discovered, culminating in Margulis' "Super-rigidity theorem" (and the
consequent "arithmetic theorem"); these will be described at some length. We
will also touch upon some applications to fields of definition of locally
symmetric varieties and some recent developments.
