Liebe Mitstudierende und Disskoll-Interessierte,
wie ihr vermutlich vor kurzem schon in einer Email von Prof. Hörmann lesen
konntet, wird das Kolloquium für Master- und Doktoratsstudierende bald
wiederbelebt. Damit soll einerseits die Kommunikation unter den
Doktoratsstudierenden an der Fakultät gefördert werden, andererseits den
Studierenden, die noch auf Betreuer-/Gruppen-/Themensuche für die
Masterarbeit/Dissertation sind,  ein Vorgeschmack auf das gegeben werden,
was sie erwarten könnte.

Dazu wird es ab Dezember regelmäßig (dienstags um 1715) Vorträge von
Studierenden in der Endphase ihres Doktorats-/Master-/Diplomstudiums geben.
Den ersten Vortrag wird Annegret Burtscher am 04. Dezember um 1715 im C2.09
halten, der Titel lautet "On the mathematical framework in general
relativity"; ein Abstract ist am Ende dieser Email zu finden.

Themen-/Vortragenden-/Vortragsvorschläge sind jederzeit per Email
willkommen.

In Kürze werden Vortragsankündigungen nur mehr über die Emailliste unter
lists.univie.ac.at/mailman/listinfo/disskoll.mathematik erfolgen, wir
bitten alle Interessierten sich dort einzutragen. Alternativ steht eine

Dear fellow students and subscribers,
as you probably read in Prof. Hörmann's mail, we want to relaunch the
colloquium for master and PhD students. By this we want to stimulate the
communication among the PhD students in mathematics at the university and
give the speakers the chance to promote their subject. This should help
people still looking for a topic/ a supervisor for their thesis (master or
PhD) in making their decision.

Beginning with December, there will be meetings on a regular basis with
lectures by students writing their diploma/master/PhD thesis. The first
talk will be given by Annegret Burtscher in C2.09 on December 4th at 1715
who will speak on the mathematical framework in general relativity (you can
find an abstract even further below).

If you are interested in giving a talk or have an idea for a topic or for a
speaker, please let us know (for example by mail).

On the mathematical framework in general relativity

Abstract:
Can we describe our universe with one equation? What would it look like?
When Einstein invented his general theory of relativity, he used geometry
to describe gravitation. More precisely, the curvature of spacetime is
directly related to the energy and momentum of matter (or vacuum) using
the Einstein equations.

We first review the notion of curvature in differential geometry and state
the Einstein equations, a system of nonlinear partial differential
equations. In the second part of the talk we focus on the initial value
problem in general relativity and discuss recent progress on global
aspects.
