student demonstration of <st1:place w:st="on">Tiananmen Square</st1:place> in
June 1989, which ended in a massacre when the People's Liberation Army was
ordered to fire on the demonstrators. He was then sent to a re-education camp
in the <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Qinling</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Mountains</st1:PlaceType>
of <st1:place w:st="on">Central China</st1:place> where he lived for what he
called "the greater part" of the 1990s. Prof. <b><font color=black><span
style='color:black;background:#FFFF66;font-weight:bold'>Wang</span></font></b>
analyses the events of 1989 and, in addition, argues that the features of
contemporary <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">China</st1:place></st1:country-region>
are a result of the new global order as a whole in which considerations of
economic growth and development have trumped every other concern, particularly
those of democracy and social justice. He calls for economic and social
justice, and an indictment of the corruption caused by the explosion of
"market extremism."<o:p></o:p></span></p>
